Out of Many, One provides students with opportunities to connect map skills with larger questions about people and patterns of life and helps them gain an understanding of how immigration and our natural resources contributed to the growth and diversity of our country. Through map-making, research, and journal-writing, they learn how geography affects clothing, housing, and food. After discovering why the United States is known as a nation of immigrants, students use family interviews and stories such as When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest to gain a greater understanding of how immigration and our vast natural resources have contributed to the growth and diversity of our country.
